I am writing this post after an exhaustive search for a perfect all around Multitool I could bring with me anywhere I go. A one size fits all approach.
After much research I have come to a final decision, and with that I would like to show you how I came to that decision and save you all the research and time I spent.
While both of these models are good choices, after filtering them through the following three categories one winner was apparent.
The Three Categories were
- Design/Functionality/Quality
- Weight/Ergonomics
- Price/Value
Test#1: Design/Functionality/Quality
This is a broad topic so I will keep it as brief as I can.
Initial Impression
My initial impression of the Leatherman is that it feels solid but surprisingly light for being made with stainless steel and Titanium.
The Gerber has a good feel to it as well but doesn’t have the same weight, which is an advantage for packing but leads me to believe the materials are not of the same quality.
Special Features
The design of the Leatherman is a more traditional butterfly open, while the Gerber includes a flip out screw driver that is bent at an angle and allows for a more screwdriver like usage.
Both come with a bit set.
Functionality
The Gerber has 16 pieces and a 12 piece bit set and includes all of the normal equipment you’d expect on a multitool.
The Leatherman Includes 19 Tools, a 12 piece bit set, replaceable wire clippers and two different clips.
ROUND#1 Winner: Leatherman
Leatherman takes this round for its more impressive tool selection and higher quality titanium base which results in a lighter weight.
Test#2:Weight/Ergonomics
They both boast one handed opening of all tools, and I found that to be true, although the Leatherman did seem smoother.
Leatherman Total Weight=.8LBS.
Gerber Total Weight=1.06LBS.
Both tools fit nicely in your hand and are not bulky.
I found the Leatherman’s pliers to work better but Gerber’s Knife is much nicer.
Round #2 Winner: Leatherman (By A Hair)
The Leatherman Charge Plus Titanium barely pulled out a victory in this category due to it’s lighter weight..
ROUND #3: Price
This one is simple.
Leatherman Charge Plus= $169.95
Gerber Center Drive Plus=$124.99
Round #3 Winner Gerber
Pretty simple category here. all things being equal, which they aren’t.
OVERALL WINNER
I ended up going with the Leatherman do to it’s higher quality, proven performance, wider Range of tools and lighter weight.
Though it is more expensive I wanted one multitool I could use for everything and this one has proven it self over and over to me.
Both are great options but the Leatherman is in a class of it’s own!
